Dog Deodorizer
Is Yours A Smelly Home?
Homes with dogs have a lot in common. There's more love, laughter, fur … and oh yes, odors!
We love our four-legged friends, but not their stinky smells.
It’s not their fault, of course. A dog’s job isn’t to stay clean and odor-free. (Ask them, and they’ll tell you it’s to look adorable and beg for treats.)
Still, as dog owners, we want to walk through the front door to a fresh-smelling home … to reclaim our indoor air without polluting it with toxins or having to do a bunch of work!
6 Ways to Eliminate Dog Odors
1. Vacuum
Did you know that dog hair itself has odors? While dogs don’t sweat the same way humans do, they still give off a light perspiration through their hair follicles. Now multiply one faint scent by the number of dog hairs you have all over the house. That’s a lot! Vacuuming is a quick and effective fix to get rid of all those hairs and their smells. If your dog is allowed on the couch, don’t forget to get in between the cushions.
2. Paws for a Moment
When you’re cuddling with your dog, have you ever wondered if he somehow got into a bag of corn chips? Many owners say their dogs’ paws smell like Fritos. Is it all in their heads? No! The bacteria that live on dog paws give off a yeasty smell that can be tracked all over your home. To get rid of this yeasty smell, keep the fur between your dog’s nails trimmed and don’t forget to scrub the paws during bath time.
3. Wash Bedding Every 2 Weeks
Your pet doesn’t care if it’s been ages since his bed and favorite blankie were washed … but you should! If dog bedding isn’t washed every two weeks, that “bad doggy smell” can start to take over the entire house.
4. Add Green to Your Scene
The NASA Clean Air Study in association with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America found that several houseplants filter out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and remove the air of toxins. These include Aloe vera, spider plants, Dracaena, golden pothos, English ivy and Chinese evergreen.
5. Bust Out the Baking Soda
Baking soda is always an excellent, albeit sometime messy, odor eliminator. Sprinkle wherever smells are a problem and leave it to sit for a few hours. Overnight is even better. Then vacuum it up and breathe easy.
6. Use a Dog Deodorizing Spray
This is the quickest and easiest way to get rid of disagreeable dog odors. No mess and no cleanup. Just spray and go.
Important – make sure the spray is non-toxic. So many air fresheners and sprays are packed with a potent chemical punch.
These products hide behind the word “fragrance.” Fragrances contain hundreds of toxic ingredients, but you won’t see them listed on the label.
Why? Because the FDA regards fragrance formulas as “proprietary” and protected under trade secret law. (Check out the Natural Resources Defense Council’s study on air fresheners here.)
No wonder the air quality inside the average person’s home is 2-5 times more polluted than the outside air.
