Cat Oral Care
Your cat has many talents: string chasing, sneak attacking your socks, and knowing exactly when you’re about to open a can of tuna fish. But there’s one trick your cat can’t wrap its paws around: dental care.
Your cat needs you – world’s greatest cat owner – to take care of his teeth cleaning needs.
Did you know? Daily dental care is one of the most important, yet overlooked, aspects of cat ownership. Taking care of your cat’s teeth can help your pet avoid painful periodontal disease and even add years to your cat’s life.
And here’s the Aha moment many cat owners have been waiting for: cat dental care DOESN’T have to be expensive, time-consuming or hard.
Cat Dental Care: A Must for a Happy, Healthy Cat
Taking care of your cat’s teeth can help your precious pet avoid periodontal disease (advanced gum disease).
By age 3, most cats have some evidence of periodontal disease.
Bad breath is often the first warning sign. (Note: a mild, fishy smell is normal when it comes to cat breath. Anything beyond that is a sign that your cat’s mouth is not getting proper care.)
How does periodontitis start? With plaque. This is the film of bacteria that forms on the teeth after meals.
If the plaque isn’t removed through at-home dental care, it eventually calcifies into a hard substance known as tartar.
Unlike plaque, which is clear, you can visibly see tartar. It looks like a cream-colored, yellow or brown hard deposit on the tooth surface.
Also unlike plaque, you can’t remove tartar at home. A trip to the vet for a dental scaling (usually under anesthesia) is required.
When the bacteria-filled tartar gets under the gum line, it causes the cat’s teeth to separate from the gums. This leads to inflammation, infection and eventual tooth loss … painful stuff for your cat to silently endure.
All that harmful bacteria can spread from your cat’s mouth to the rest of the body via the bloodstream, impacting your cat’s vital organs, and ultimately, his lifespan.
And to think … it all starts with plaque buildup.
3 Tips for Easy At-Home Cat Dental Care
1. Feed a High-Quality Food
Cats are carnivores, so low-quality cat foods loaded with grains won’t help their overall health … OR their dental health. When carbs come in contact with saliva, they stick to the teeth, sending plaque formation into overdrive.
Myth buster: it’s often advertised that dry kibble can scrape plaque off of cats’ teeth. However, cats normally just swallow these pellets whole. And if they do chew on them, there’s not enough chewing action to make any difference in their dental health.
2. Treat to Raw Bones
If you can give your cat a raw bone without it getting all over the carpet, this is a great option for plaque removal. Raw chicken necks are a good size for cats to chew on. Important: never give cooked bones to your cat, as they can splinter and become lodged in the intestines.
