What Not To Do With Your Tooth Brush

A toothbrush is one of the things that you use at least twice every day. Many people do not give it much thought or importance as long as it serves its purpose to brush your teeth. Unbeknownst to many, there are certain things that you should not do when handling your toothbrush. Bear in mind that while it is an essential tool to clean your teeth in order to get rid of bacteria, a toothbrush can also be hazardous to your health especially when it’s not taken care of properly. Here are some of the things that you should NOT do with your toothbrush.

  • Do not get attached to your toothbrush. The common rule is to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. When you notice that the bristles on your toothbrush are already worn out, then it’s time to say goodbye. Your old toothbrush won’t be able to clean your teeth thoroughly therefore increasing the chances of plaque build-up.
  • Refrain from putting your brush away into it’s container or cabinet right away. Your toothbrush should be given time to dry out completely that’s why it is best to place it out on the open so that the air can dry it out.
  • It is advisable to store it out on the open but do not place it near the toilet. Every time you flush the toilet bacteria can travel through the air and land on your toothbrush. If that information is not enough to gross you out then there’s something wrong with you.
  • The right storage area should not be near the sink or lavatory where dirty and soapy water can reach your toothbrush. Place it in a dry, open space where the toothbrush can breathe. Remember to also store it upright so that it is easier to dry out.
  • No matter how close you are with your husband, boyfriend, or friend, never share your toothbrush. You can easily transfer germs and illnesses such as common cold, flu, or hepatitis through sharing. When storing several toothbrushes in one holder, make sure that the bristles are not touching each other to prevent the easy spreading of bacteria.
  • Never clean your toothbrush inside the dishwasher because it can be damaged. When you want to dry your toothbrush fast, do not place it inside the microwave oven. The heat will not disinfect the toothbrush but only cause damages to it.
  • Do not rinse the toothbrush too quickly. Remember to get rid of all debris and toothpaste on the bristles before letting it dry out completely. Small pieces of food may also get stuck in between the bristles so make sure that it is thoroughly rinsed. Some people wash their brush with soap before storing it. Instead of cleaning it, you can damage the teeth enamel and increase the chances of getting sensitive teeth.
