Kuma is a typical 12 week old husky that loves to play, run, and bite. Oh, does she love to bite! She hasn’t gotten the concept of “lick” yet, and she likes to put everything in her mouth: weeds, our arms, my hair, everything.
My husband asked me to go to the store to pick up a couple things, and I thought it would be great to get her a bone to chew on instead of my face. Of course, I have no idea what to get, and I have no idea how long it will last her. So I got the cheapest rawhide bone I could find that looked to be something her size.
When I got home, I was so excited to show her. I pulled out the bone, let her sniff it, and she just stared at it. She had a look on her face of, “What am I supposed to do with that?” So I put it on the ground, and walked away. All the sudden, I start hearing barking. She’s barking at the dang bone. She walked around it, stared at it, and wouldn’t let it out of her sight all while barking at the newly strange object mom just brought home. Obviously it’s adorable, and I posted a video on Facebook.
But then it became an hour of barking at the bone. An hour of the same pitch whining at this foreign thing sitting in her space. Taking it away didn’t work, because she would bark at the table where I put it. Then, something crazy happened. She discovered the deliciousness of the hard, yet chewy bone. It was like she discovered a new drug. This dog freaked out! She would not stop chewing it for at least 3 to 4 hours. She sat in front of the couch – having nothing to do with us – and gnawed at this bone.
Needless to say, the bone didn’t survive the night, and we are now investing in bigger rawhide bones. Next thing to worry about is her burying them in the yard…
Until next time,
M.
