This heartwarming, coming-of-age tale follows a young girl and her “ugly, happy” dog. Most people have either read the book or seen the movie, but it’s definitely a classic worth revisiting.

This is a beautiful tale of a single mother and her two daughters, one of whom has a severe autism-like disorder, which makes life – and finding a home – very difficult. At one point, the girl draws near to the neighbor’s dog and forms a bond that leaves everyone in awe.
