Lost
Pets
Spring
means more outdoor fun, more travel, more trips to parks and
more socializing with friends. In the flurry, accidents happen.
Children forget, giving pets a chance to escape through an
opened door or gate. An unsecured window, an open car door, a loose hold on the leash are all risk factors for a quick pet escape and in an instant life changes for the owner. Fortunately, most pets are quickly and safely recovered from an escape. When they are not it can be devastating.

Vegetarian Pet Diets
There is an increasing trend for people to make a switch to organic
and vegetarian diets for themselves, and more recently for their pets. Reasons
for the vegetarian change may be health-driven or out of concern for animal
rights. It is estimated there are 12 to 15 million human vegetarians in the
U.S. Dogs, like people, are omnivores meaning that they can eat, digest and
metabolize both animal and plant foods.

Bulldogs
Break Into The Top 10 Most Popular Breed List
The Bulldog breaks into the top 10 list for first time since 1935, displacing
the Miniature Schnauzer from the final spot. There are 157 breeds recognized
by the AKC, the largest purebred dog registry.
The Bulldog was first recognized by the AKC in 1886 — just two years after
the organization was founded. Bulldogs were most popular in 1915, when they
peaked in 5th place.

5 SPRING PET ALERTS |
|
The days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising. Spring has finally arrived. For many of us, that means more time outdoors with our four-legged friends. Unfortunately, this time of year presents some challenges to our pets. Remember, be careful out there!
1. Allergies
Aaah
Spring! The most common sign of allergies in people is sneezing
and sinus congestion. For pets, however, the most common sign
is scratching, which can be severe enough to cause painful
wounds and secondary infections. Using over-the-counter
antihistamines, combined with more frequent bathing to
remove pollen from the coat (which act like a magnetic
dust mop) can be very helpful in managing pet allergies.
Be sure to comb or cut out any tangles in the coat and
consider trimming the hair short during allergy season.
Oxyfresh Pet Antioxidants can help manage free radicals
produced by allergy victims while helping stabilize the
immune system.
2. Parasites/Disease
The
increased outdoor activity, coupled with warmer weather
increases the probability of pets being exposed to and
contracting disease. Scraps of food and waste that may
have been preserved for as long as several months by the
cool winter weather can now be a treasured find for your
pet. Unfortunately, the find includes a high risk of food
poisoning. Other sources of bacterial or viral contamination
also become more prevalent with the warm weather. There
is a higher risk of your pet picking up parasites as well.
More visits to dog parks and generally greater animal
activity in the spring spreads more parasites like intestinal
worms, fleas and ticks.
3. Toxins
Pets
are often attracted to the fresh smell of spring plants,
some of which are toxic. Almost any growing plants, if
consumed in large enough quantities, can cause intestinal
upset. Agriculture chemicals such as fertilizer, insecticides
and herbicides are applied in the spring by both farmers
and homeowners. Exposure can sometimes cause chemical burns
to the feet, digestive problems and even more serious illnesses,
especially if the chemicals have not been “watered in” or
the foliage is still wet from a recent application.
4. Injury
Pets
get “spring fever” just like we do after being less active
all winter. In their excitement and playfulness they
are at a higher risk of injuring themselves. Pools and
lakes become attractive and pets may be distracted by the
moment and find themselves in a dangerous position. Just
like us, pets should increase their exercise gradually
to avoid sore muscles and joints, and to lessen the probability
of an injury. Using Pet Antioxidants can reduce free-radical
damage caused by increased activity or injury.
5. Loss
The
high energy and distractions of spring also mean a greater
likelihood of pets getting lost. Be sure to do all you
can to prevent the escape of your pet by keeping doors
and gates closed. Always walk pets on a leash and exercise
them off leash in a properly contained area. |
